Dangers of Chemical Hair Relaxers: Natural Treatments to Count On

Published

on

Natural Treatments

For decades, chemical hair relaxers and straighteners have been the go-to beauty treatments for women. But what if this attempt to get sleek, shiny, and stylish hair comes with a hidden cost–that of life-threatening health conditions, including cancer?

Today, several women who have chemically treated their hair are reporting multiple health issues. It has led to a wave of lawsuits against companies that produce hair relaxers and straighteners. As a result, it has raised concerns regarding consumer safety and industry practices.

By the end of 2022, women across the United States started to sue hair straightener manufacturers after studies revealed that these products cause cancer. The lawyers who were dealing with the legal cases for these women urged the U.S. Judicial Panel on MDL to consolidate the lawsuits in a single MDL. The panel did the same in

February 2023, with an aim to increase pretrial procedures and effective discovery.

In this article, we will discuss the health hazards caused by hair relaxers and the natural treatments women can opt for instead.

Hair Relaxers and Cancer

In November 2023, a Reuters news article reported on Sheila Bush, a cosmetologist, who came across a television ad by a law firm. It urged viewers to connect with a toll-free number if their loved ones have suffered from uterine cancer after using hair relaxers. Bush stated that she decided to make a call, as she had developed this disease after using hair relaxers frequently.

The ad was an attempt by law firms nationwide to urge victims to file a hair straightener cancer lawsuit against brands like Revlon and L’Oreal. It’s because these brands persisted in selling hair relaxers with toxic chemicals that had a high risk of causing uterine cancer and didn’t inform customers about this side-effect.

In a study that was published in Carcinogenesis, researchers followed over 200 women for almost a decade. They found out that using hair relaxers over four times in one year was linked to ovarian cancer. Another study by NIH published in the ‘International Journal of Cancer’ found that women who frequently treated their hair chemically were vulnerable to breast cancer.

After decades of using chemical hair relaxers, Michele Lynn was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mike, her husband, shared with Drugwatch that her cancer was diagnosed when she was 43 years old. Many women, like Michele and Sheila, have developed cancer after a chemical hair treatment and still wonder what led to it.

How Do Hair Relaxers Cause Cancer?

Most hair smoothening products contain formaldehyde, which is also called methylene glycol and formalin. As stylists apply the hair treatment solution to your hair and heat it using a flat iron, formaldehyde gets released into the air. It is a strong-smelling gas that doesn’t have an odor.

However, when you inhale the chemical or when it comes into contact with your skin and eyes, it can cause irritation. The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) states formaldehyde to be carcinogenic after studies done on leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer.

The other harsh chemicals that are present in hair relaxers are metals, bisphenol A, and parabens. All these compounds can increase the cancer risk. Other side effects of chemical hair treatments include changes in hair texture and color, eczema, and hair loss.

TorHoerman Law states that if you have had cancer or any other serious health hazard after using hair relaxers, you should file a lawsuit. Consulting a lawyer is essential, as they will let you know about your eligibility to file a complaint. They will also let you know about the settlement payout that you can use to cover the damages you’ve endured.

The Natural Treatments to Opt For

We live in a world where women are compelled to look good, or else they are judged harshly for their unimpressive appearance. Hair styling is an important part of grooming. Thus, every woman wants her hair to appear shiny and healthy. To accomplish this without facing the side effects of hair relaxers, women should opt for natural treatments like:

  • Milk Mask: It can help to smooth and nourish hair. The best ingredient to use here is coconut milk. After you wash your hair, use it like a conditioner and leave it for 10 minutes. After that, rinse it and dry your hair naturally. If you have wavy hair, it will work wonders after consistent use.
  • Hot Oil Massage: A healthy scalp is the key to having great-looking hair. Use any oil you are comfortable with on your scalp and massage it before washing your hair. It will ensure that your hair appears shiny and is healthy from the root. Repeat this twice a week for best results.

That aside, you can also use non-toxic and herbal hair serums that are benign and help to manage frizzy hair without causing any harmful effects.

In conclusion, recently the legal complaints about hair relaxers have gone up. Therefore, women who love to style their hair should be careful about the products they use, lest they harm themselves. It is necessary to check the safety of a hair styling product before using it. Seeking the guidance of an expert hair stylist also helps. That aside, it is always better to opt for natural treatments to stay away from any adverse health hazards.
